Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards Honest. Daring. Eloquent young voices. Since 1999, Carnegie Mellon University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards has provided an outlet for young people to express their personal experiences with difference and discrimination of all kinds through poetry and prose. The mission of the awards is to create a safe and creative haven for sharing.

Kenasha Kalphat an Upper Sixth form student copped the top prize in the Martin Luther King Essay competition in the 17-19 age group category to help lighten the mood at the school after a trying two.
Through the good speeches and sermons of Martin Luther King (Jr.) wanted a lot of people both black and whites to campaign they were hopeful of him. Martin Luther King (Jr.) was for nonviolence and against discrimination and found that blacks and whites were equal. That was his dream. The supporters of King were especially poor black people.
The winners will receive a prize and be recognized as part of the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration event on January 25, 2020 in the University Ballroom at Sacramento State University. The essay contest is open to youth (Middle and High School students) who live in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, and Sutter Counties.
Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family’s long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor.
